Summer Camp

Holiday Home CampersOur summer camp program consists of one or two week sessions for 7-13 year olds. In addition, we offer two - one week sessions for 7-16 year olds. The activities that the children participate are “traditional” in nature: swimming lessons, learning to row a boat, participating in skits, hanging out in our library, tracking animals in the woods, singing at evening campfires and archery. They see and hear different things -- a deer in the woods, woodchucks scurrying for cover, worms on the driveway after a heavy rain, birds chirping at dawn, crickets at night and silence.

The program philosophy at Holiday Home Camp is based on the cooperative spirit of games and competition, building team work and trust with and among the campers. We recognize that it is important for the youth of today to experience and learn good sportsmanship through losing and winning. We facilitate these experiences to enhance the learning opportunities these feelings can provide. It is through these processes that we can strengthen our campers ability Summer Camperto reject peer pressure. We enhance their self-esteem and self-confidence, develop cooperative living skills and help them discover self-sufficiency for survival and success, not only for growing up, but for growing up in urban or economically stressed environment.

We teach the campers ownership in their communities by holding them responsible fore the basic care of their cabins and common areas. Campers are responsible for “cleaning up” after themselves -- making their own bed, setting the table before meals, tidying up the playroom after they are finished and sweeping the dining hall after meals. For many of our campers, the act of sitting at a table, passing and sharing food and talking during a meal is a new experience. For many campers, they are not familiar with a “family-style” meal. We offer new experiences and routines that we hope that the campers take home with them and share with friends and families.
